ABSTRACT

Cetacean tourism and vessel traffic have grown considerably around the world in recent decades. At Akaroa Harbor, Aotearoa New Zealand, recreational vessel traffic, dolphin tourism, and cruise ship presence increased substantially between 2008 and 2020. We examined the relationship between vessel traffic parameters and the presence of Hector's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus hectori) during the austral summer 2019–2020, using automated vessel tracking and autonomous passive acoustic monitoring. Data were collected between December 2019 and May 2020, including the entirety of the first COVID‐19 nationwide lockdown. Generalized additive models revealed that increasing levels of motor vessel traffic, the presence of cruise ships, and high levels of dolphin tour vessel traffic resulted in decreases in acoustic detections of dolphins. Our findings suggest that Hector's dolphins at Akaroa Harbor were displaced from core habitat in response to each of these vessel traffic parameters. We recommend that managers use immediately actionable tools to reduce the impacts of vessels on these dolphins.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the residual pods of the forest species Erythrina speciosa were carbonized with ZnCl2 to obtain porous activated carbon and investigated for the adsorptive removal of the drug paracetamol (PCM) from water. The PCM adsorption onto activated carbon is favored at acidic solution pH. The isothermal studies confirmed that increasing the temperature from 298 to 328 K decreased the adsorption capacity from 65 mg g-1 to 50.4 mg g-1 (C0 = 175 mg L-1). The Freundlich model showed a better fit of the equilibrium isotherms. Thermodynamic studies confirmed the exothermic nature (ΔH0 = -39.1066 kJ mol-1). Kinetic data indicates that the external mass transfer occurs in the first minutes followed by the surface diffusion, considering that the linear driving force model described the experimental data. The application of the material in the treatment of a simulated effluent with natural conditions was promising, presenting a removal of 76.45%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the application of residual pods of the forest species Erythrina speciosa carbonized with ZnCl2 is highly efficient in the removal of the drug paracetamol and also in mixtures containing other pharmaceutical substances.

ABSTRACT

Purpose : COVID-19 pandemic has become a major global public health challenge. The ophthalmology office setting involves close encounters between the patient and the health care workers increasing risk of viral transmission. Use of PPE decreases risk of person-to-person viral transmission. The purpose of the study was to evaluate breath-induced air currents in subjects without a facemask, with a procedure mask, with an improvised face, and in the setting of slit-lamp examination. Methods : Breath-induced air currents were studied in healthy volunteers utilizing a vape pod system and videography during gentle and heavy breathing simulation. Video frames at 2 seconds after the initiation of expiration were captured and analyzed. Results : A total of 210 recordings were made for 7 settings. Without a face mask, the aerosol moved forwards and spread vertically and horizontally reaching a mean distance of 23.1 inches for gentle, and 36.1 inches for heavy breathing at 2 seconds (P< 0.001). Using PPE the airflow patterns included: a) procedure mask- forward 0 cases, upward 19 (63%) cases, side 28 (93%) cases, downward 22 (73%) cases, and backward 22 (73%) cases. Adding a tape at the upper border of the mask eliminated upward flow in all cases. b) Improvised face mask- forward 0 cases, upward 0 cases, side 30 (100%) cases, downward 30 (100%) cases, and backward 17 (57%) cases. In 14 (47%) cases trace of aerosol was detected adjacent to the front surface of the mask. Adding a second layer eliminated the trace of aerosol in all cases. In the setting of simulated slit-lamp examination without the breath shield, the aerosol reached the chin rest in 9 (60%) cases during gentle breathing and in all cases during heavy breathing. The breath shield was effective in blocking forward airflow in all cases. Conclusions : Use of a procedure mask by patients, while effective in blocking forward breath-induced airflow, redirects the flow upwards, potentially increasing the risk of contamination during an office procedure. An improvised facemask alters breath-induced air currents favorably and partially absorbs respiratory droplets.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to propose a new design for a sustainable built environment using a specific business system as an example that transforms and implements modular systems and ultraviolet (UV) lighting to prevent the spread of infectious agents after COVID-19, which directly affects the ability of some types of businesses to function. The paper explores the possibility of purchasing, introducing and using UV radiation for disinfection of premises and the destruction of potentially dangerous viruses and bacteria. The proposed model allows self-isolating persons to adapt to the changing reality and remain productive consumers of goods and services within the business system under study. The modular system, combined with germicidal UV lamps, due to their ability to inactivate viruses, effectively creates a safe hygienic environment, which affects the attractiveness of the territory for visitors and increases the number of 'contacts' of the consumer with the company and brand.

ABSTRACT

An increasing number of tobacco products are entering the market, offering a variety of options to attain desired nicotine intake. However, little is known about the effect of this diverse marketplace on the experiences and nicotine exposure among tobacco users. A mixed-methods study examined experiences with tobacco products among individuals with relatively lower or higher levels of biomarkers of nicotine exposure. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with younger and older adults to examine tobacco use behaviors, addiction to tobacco products, and nicotine effects. Younger and older adults provided similar narratives about addiction and nicotine effects, which were similar across age groups, product types (i.e., ENDS, combustible cigarettes, or oral tobacco products), and having lower or higher nicotine exposure. Some individuals with higher nicotine exposure who switched from combustible cigarettes to another product (e.g., ENDS) found similar or greater access and perceived addiction to nicotine. Adults with higher and lower levels of nicotine exposure provided narratives consistent with features of nicotine addiction, regardless of age and products used. Availability of multiple tobacco products may be associated with greater access and exposure to nicotine. Addiction may occur at low levels of use and with non-cigarette products.

ABSTRACT

The current fourth generation ("pod-style") electronic cigarette, or vaping, products (EVPs) heat a liquid ("e-liquid") contained in a reservoir ("pod") using a battery-powered coil to deliver aerosol into the lungs. A portion of inhaled EVP aerosol is estimated as exhaled, which can present a potential secondhand exposure risk to bystanders. The effects of modifiable factors using either a prefilled disposable or refillable pod-style EVPs on aerosol particle size distribution (PSD) and its respiratory deposition are poorly understood. In this study, the influence of up to six puff profiles (55-, 65-, and 75-ml puff volumes per 6.5 and 7.5 W EVP power settings) on PSD was evaluated using a popular pod-style EVP (JUUL® brand) and a cascade impactor. JUUL® brand EVPs were used to aerosolize the manufacturers' e-liquids in their disposable pods and laboratory prepared "reference e-liquid" (without flavorings or nicotine) in refillable pods. The modeled dosimetry and calculated aerosol mass median aerodynamic diameters (MMADs) were used to estimate regional respiratory deposition. From these results, exhaled fraction of EVP aerosols was calculated as a surrogate of the secondhand exposure potential. Overall, MMADs did not differ among puff profiles, except for 55- and 75-ml volumes at 7.5 W (p < 0.05). For the reference e-liquid, MMADs ranged from 1.02 to 1.23 µm and dosimetry calculations predicted that particles would deposit in the head region (36-41%), in the trachea-bronchial (TB) region (19-21%), and in the pulmonary region (40-43%). For commercial JUUL® e-liquids, MMADs ranged from 0.92 to 1.67 µm and modeling predicted that more particles would deposit in the head region (35-52%) and in the pulmonary region (30-42%). Overall, 30-40% of the particles aerosolized by a pod-style EVP were estimated to deposit in the pulmonary region and 50-70% of the inhaled EVP aerosols could be exhaled; the latter could present an inhalational hazard to bystanders in indoor occupational settings. More research is needed to understand the influence of other modifiable factors on PSD and exposure potential.

The purpose of this article is to describe techniques for protecting code when distributed in source format. This situation occurs when, for instance, the client component of a web application, whose source code is easily extractable from the browser even by inexperienced users. The case study proposed uses the Adobe Connectc platform, an emerging technology in the field of video communication, content sharing and e-learning environments, which allows to easy integration of applications written in javascript language. The astonishing ease of realization of embedded applications within AdobeR's ecosystem contrasts with the impossibility of protecting the work done, which is visible and redistributable simply by copying the file containing it. The unwary author may thus run the risk of seeing his work thwarted by losing any intellectual property rights arising from the use of the software he has created. ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel etiology of end-stage lung disease, has resulted in major disruptions to the process of health care delivery worldwide. These disruptions have led to team-based innovations globally, resulting in a broad range of new processes in cardiopulmonary perioperative management. A key intersection of multidisciplinary teamwork and COVID-19 is found in lung transplantation, in which diverse teams collaborate throughout the perioperative period to achieve optimal outcomes. In this article, we describe the multidisciplinary approach taken by Mayo clinic in Florida to manage patients with COVID-19 presenting for lung transplantation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The BOD POD (COSMED USA Inc., Concord, CA) is a common instrument used to assess body composition by employing air displacement plethysmography and whole-body densitometry to determine body volume. This instrument requires isothermal conditions during testing; therefore, the introduction of outside isothermal air can impact testing results. With the COVID-19 pandemic introducing face mask mandates, it is unknown whether the use of a face mask during BOD POD testing may lead to erroneous measurement by introducing isothermal air. Thus, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the impact of wearing a surgical face mask compared to not wearing a surgical face mask on body composition assessment among adults. METHODS: During testing, female subjects were required to wear a swimsuit or form-fitting lycra shorts and a sports bra and male subjects were required to wear form-fitting lycra shorts. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) level one surgical face masks (bacterial and particulate filtration efficiency of 95%) and standard swim caps were provided by researchers. Variables of interest included percent body fat, body fat, percent lean body mass, and lean body mass. Participants (n = 33) completed one test wearing a mask and one test without a mask back-to-back with conditions held constant. Dependent-sample sign tests, Bland-Altman Plots, and Passing-Bablok regression analyses were used to test mask-on versus mask-off differences and agreement between variables of interest. RESULTS: There were no significant median differences in any body composition results between face mask use and non-face mask use using dependent-sample sign tests. Bland-Altman Plots demonstrated acceptable agreement between mask usage and non-mask usage. No significant differences were seen in the slopes of the variables using Passing-Bablok regression. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that wearing a face mask does not appreciably impact body composition results. Therefore, ASTM level 1 disposable surgical face mask does not introduce a significant amount of isothermal air during BOD POD testing.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Identify e-cigarette devices, brands, and flavor types used by adolescents and young adults soon after the enactment of flavor restrictions, youth access laws, FDA's enforcement prioritization against some flavored pod/cartridge-based e-cigarettes, and during COVID-19 pandemic-related school closures. METHODS: National cross-sectional online survey (N = 4,351) in May 2020 assessed popularity, ever- and past-30-day use of e-cigarette device types (pod/cartridge-based, disposables, others), brands, flavor types and flavor-enhancers, by age group (under age 21 and 21 and over). RESULTS: While pod/cartridge-based e-cigarettes had the highest ever-use (82.7% <21; 69.8% ≥21) and were most often-used (41.9% <21; 41.4% ≥21), most past 30-day-users (50.8% <21; 61.9% ≥21) and 7-day-users (36.0% <21; 56.7% ≥21) used disposables. Mint/menthol was the most-used flavor type (pod/cartridge-based: 48.2% <21, 48.1% ≥21; disposables: 51.6% <21, 56.4% ≥21), followed by fruit (pod/cartridge-based: 37.4% <21, 35.5%≥ 21; disposables: 51.6% >21, 46.2% ≥ 21), and sweet/dessert/candy flavor types (pod/cartridge-based: 24.4% <21, 24.7% ≥21; disposables: 29.7% <21, 33.8% ≥21). Participants reported using add-on e-cigarette flavor-enhancers (pod/cartridge-based: 24.6%; disposables: 31.3%). CONCLUSION: Soon after FDA's January 2020 announcement of prioritized enforcement against flavored pod/cartridge-based e-cigarettes and during the pandemic lockdown, adolescents' and young adults' past 30-day use included mostly flavored disposables rather than pod/cartridge-based e-cigarettes, mint/menthol flavors, and some used add-on flavor enhancers. To reduce youth use, comprehensive regulation of e-cigarette devices and flavors should be enacted and enforced at federal, state, and local levels.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This project investigated into the design and construction of an isolation pod to keep infected people in quarantine, thus avoiding the spread of viruses such as the COVID-19. This product was made to be used in hospitals and at homes. BACKGROUND: Mauritius is among the few countries, which has not had any cases of COVID-19 since for since May 2020 for a period of 150 days. It has opened its borders since October 2020, and since Mauritius being a small country, the spread of any type of virus can be imminent if not controlled properly. In case there is another spread of the COVID-19 in Mauritius, then the isolation pod could be used to keep infected people in quarantine. The aims of the study were to develop a prototype of an isolation cubicle that is collapsible and can be easily erected at homes or in hospitals, whenever the need arises. METHODS: A prototype of the pod was made with metal bars welded together and tarpaulin materials were sewn together. A HEPA Fan Extractor was fitted inside the pod to allow the air to circulate. RESULTS: the tests carried out the pod could easily be assembled, transported and stored for further usage. From the volunteers' feedback, it was found that the pod was comfortable, spacious, and practical. The air monitoring tests carried on the carbon dioxide, temperature, and relative humidity were within the acceptable ranges.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Conjoined twin is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by a fusion of certain anatomical structures. Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) is a new emerging infectious respiratory disease affecting worldwide and potentially leads to acute respiratory distress (ARDS) in children. COVID-19 has reconstructed the healthcare system, including surgical care and decision-making. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein we describe a surgical separation of 2.5 months old omphalopagus conjoined twins, with one of them (Baby A) presenting COVID-19-associated respiratory distress, as well as the challenges faced during the preparation and the execution of the complex surgical procedure. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Baby A underwent antiviral therapy, oxygen supplementation, and ventilation in the ICU, while baby B remained stable and confirmed negative for SARS-CoV-2. The separation surgery was conducted after baby A had become clinically stable. Defect closure and reconstruction were accomplished. At one week follow-up, Baby A died of lung infection, while baby B remained well after one year. CONCLUSION: The complexity of surgical separation requires careful planning by a multidisciplinary team. Surgical separation of conjoined twins during the pandemic era has not been reported much in the literature, more reports are required to provide further insight.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to morbidity and mortality rate per se, COVID-19 outbreak leads to potential 'side effects', which are difficult to evaluate and predict. Lung transplantation is a consolidated treatment for end-stage chronic lung disease requiring significantly demanding management. Deciding whether to keep transplant programmes open during an epidemic of this size is not easy, as immunosuppressed subjects face the risk of infection and related mortality. Additionally, there is a chance for the patient's standard care process to be compromised. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a patient undergoing bilateral lung transplantation during the explosion of COVID-19 epidemic in Lombardy; he died from definite early acute antibody-mediated rejection, clinically (persistent high fever, unresponsive to treatment) and radiologically mimicking viral pneumonia but persistently negative for SARS-CoV-2. DISCUSSION: The diagnosis was difficult given this atypical presentation, confounded by global scenario. Grafts were procured from a donation after circulatory death donor in an uncontrolled setting and a donor-recipient transmission was possible. Our institute became a COVID-Hospital right during the first post-transplantation days. Radiological imaging had the same features of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of lung transplantation of the COVID-19 era in Europe. Our extremely fragile patient was COVID-19 free up to the end. Donor-recipient transmission is conceivable, but the risk should be assessed with respect to waiting list mortality. Ultimately, treating COVID-19 patients can be a resource-consuming activity but we decided to keep our centre open.

We present the case of a child diagnosed with COVID-19 soon after open-heart surgery who required an urgent second surgery. The patient suffered from severe COVID-19 disease. The utility of preoperative COVID-19 testing, determination of recovery by an array of inflammatory markers and perioperative management are described.
